1. Member enrollment guide

The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials was established on 14 February 1937 based on a proposal by Dr. Kotaro Honda with the aim of promoting the advancement of theory and industrial processes related to metals.The Institute publishes academic journals and books, holds conferences and workshops, conducts investigation and research, and commends and encourages operation with the aim of invigorating academic efforts and scientific technology in the fields of metals and related materials.We invite all researchers, engineers, and students who are active in related fields, such as infrastructure materials, energy materials, eco-materials, electronic and information materials, biological and healthcare materials, and materials and society, and who are passionate about their field to join the Institute.

The institute bulletin Materia Japan is provided to members only.
Furthermore, members can receive privileges such as participation in the annual meetings at member prices, exemption from presentation fees, purchase publications at member prices, and participation in seminars, symposiums, lecture and presentation meetings, and other events held by JIM at member discount prices.

2. Membership types

Regular Member
  • Individuals who reside in Japan, agree with the aims and join in the Activities of this organization
    *There is a lifetime membership system for people who have been members for 40 years or more and are 71 years of age or older (*1).
Student Member
  • Students who reside in Japan, agree with the aims and support the Activities of this organization (*2)
Regular members other than those residing in Japan
  • Individuals other than those residing in Japan who agree with the aims and support the Activities of this organization
Student Member other than those residing in Japan
  • Students other than those residing in Japan who agree with the aims and support the Activities of this organization
  • *1: Application form is required to submit for qualification of a lifetime membership, who exempt for membership fee payment.
  • *2: Students are those being enrolled in a national institute of technology, a junior college, or a university (undergraduate or graduate level).

3. Privileges for individual members

(1) Publications

You receive rapid access to the latest academic and technological directions in the field of metals and related materials.The institute bulletin “Materia Japan” allows you to study the fundamentals of fields through introductory lectures, lecture notes, and explanatory notes for non-specialists.

  • The Institute bulletin “Materia Japan” is issued monthly. It can also be browsed as an electronic journal (*1).
  • The Japanese-language academic journal “Journal of the Japan Institute of Metals and Materials” can be subscribed to at member prices (*2).
  • The English-language academic journal “Materials Transactions” can be subscribed to at member prices (*3).
  • Books published by the Institute can be purchased at member discount prices.
  • *1: A member ID and password are required to browse the electronic journals.
  • *2: Electronic journals are open access.
  • *3: Electronic journals become open access from six months after publication.
  • *4: To subscribe to the electronic journals, use the website to change the subscribed Institute journals.

(2) Conferences and Workshops

Cutting-edge research information can be obtained at annual meetings of JIM where research results are presented.This allows research to be deepened by presenting and discussing research results.

  • You can participate in the annual meetings at member prices. The collection of conference abstracts is included in the registration fee.
  • You can give presentations at the annual meetings. Non-members are required to pay a presentation fee in order to make a presentation.
  • You can participate in seminars, symposiums, and other events held by the Institute at member discount prices.
  • You have priority when joining the activities of the branches.

(3) Research

  • You can participate in the activities of the technical divisions, which are made up of expert groups in each field.

  • You can apply to register for research groups.

(4) Exchange

The Institute aims for academic and technical exchange among university and company researchers and engineers in a wide range of fields related to metals.

  • You can participate to the annual meetings of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan at reduced registration fees under a bilateral agreement.
  • You can participate in the conference banquet of the annual meetings. A conference banquet fee is required to participate.

Note: An enrollment fee of 1,000 yen is required in addition to the annual fee on joining. Student members and non-Japanese student members are exempt from the enrollment fee.

Note: Shipping charge is required for a print journal: 1,800Yen for surface mail, 6,000Yen for airmail.

Note: Bank handling charge for each subscription : 4,000Yen.

  • The period of the annual fee is from January to December.
  • The enrollment fee and annual fee are not subject to consumption tax.
  • For members residing outside of Japan, if payment of annual fees is made by bank transfer or check, a handling fee of 4,000 yen applies. This handling fee is not required for payments by credit card.
  • For people living overseas, the annual fee if joining in the middle of a period is the full 1 year fee.
  • Members other than those residing in Japan can choose Materia Japan.
  • Materia Japan can also be browsed as an online journal.
  • Regular members, Regular members other than those residing in Japan, Student members and Student members other than those residing in Japan must pay a separate subscription fee if they subscribe to printed Materials Transactions and printed Journal of the Japan Institute of Metals and Materials. The online journal is provided for free.
  • A separate participation fee is required for participation in annual meetings (the conference abstracts are provided as part of this fee).
  • Student members and Student members other than those residing in Japan are automatically changed to Regular members and Regular members other than those residing in Japan, respectively, once they are no longer students. The membership fee for that year remains the Student members or the Student members other than those residing in Japan fee.
  • The name of an individual member cannot be changed. A new enrollment form must be completed to change the name.

5. Methods of paying the annual fee

  • Annual fees can be paid by credit card, bank transfer, or check.
  • Annual fees are due in advance. Please make payment by the end of December for the annual fee for one year, starting from the following January.
  • If you have not paid the annual fees for this year, please pay them together with the annual fee for the following year.
