Special Issue:“Development and Functionality of Titanium and Its Alloys as Structural, Biocompatible, and Energy Materials”

The editorial committee of Materials Transactions is planning to publish a special issue on “Development and Functionality of Titanium and Its Alloys as Structural, Biocompatible, and Energy Materials” as May 2025.
The committee would like to invite many contributions of original articles from around the globe for this special issue.

Objective and topics of coverage are as follows:
This special issue is planned in collaboration between members of The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials (JIMM) and The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) and covers the recent progress regarding the development and functionality of Ti and its alloys. These materials have been used in various industrial fields as structural and biocompatible materials. In addition, the hydrogen storage using Ti alloys is an important initiative from the viewpoint of carbon-neutrality. In the achievement of high-performance Ti and its alloys, it is essential to design and control the alloy composition, fabrication method, and processing technique. These factors influence the crystal structure and microstructure, which in turn determine the functionality of Ti and its alloy. Recently, there has been active research of using ω phases, doping with interstitial elements, developing high entropy alloys, and utilizing additive manufacturing methods. Moreover, in computational research, in addition to elucidating phenomena, large-scale calculations are being carried out to search for novel alloy compositions. Corrosion, oxidation and heat resistances are also important topics as well as enhancement of mechanical properties. Therefore, this special issue deals with the development and characterization of Ti and its alloys by experimental and computational approaches. Anyone interested in the proposed topics is welcome to this special issue.

Topics:
titanium (Ti, Ti alloys, intermetallic compounds, composites, medium and high entropy alloys,…), fabrication (melting, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, …), processing (annealing, rolling, bending, forging, drawing, extrusion, severe plastic deformation, friction stir welding, …), crystal structure (crystalline phase, phase transformation, …), microstructure (grain boundary, interface, texture, vacancy, dislocation, twin, stacking faults, segregation, precipitation, …), structural properties (hardness, strength, ductility, plasticity, fatigue, creep, …), functional properties (hydrogen storage, hydrogen embrittlement, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, shape memory…), theoretical studies (modeling, finite element simulation, first-principles calculation, …)
